23. Iris

Iris stretched as she awoke, the hard body beside her unyielding as she pushed against it. Blinking her eyes open, she looked around and realized they were in her room.

She didn’t remember anything after the mind-shattering orgasm ripped her apart. Verik had licked and teased her until she gave in and begged for him to finish her. To let her come.

Feeling her cheeks flush, she glanced at him and realized he wasn’t sleeping.

“Feel better?”

His rumbled question sent a shiver down her spine. Embarrassed at falling asleep after what he had done, she wasn’t sure if he was referring to her orgasm, or the nap.

“Yes,” she nodded.

He smirked and Iris narrowed her eyes, rolling from the bed. She still had her tunic on, though he must have left her pants where he dropped them when he yanked them off.

Rubbing her arms, she watched Verik rise from the corner of her eye. He still had pants on, but the bulge in the front was obvious, and she felt another pang of guilt.

He lifted his shirt from the floor, turning to her as he pulled it on.

“The snow seems to have stopped. I’m going to go check on the men. I want you to stay inside.”

“I shouldn’t be too long.”

Striding past her, she followed him down the hall and watched as he shrugged into his cloak. His gaze was intense as he looked back at her before moving to where she stood in the middle of the room.

Gripping her chin, he tilted her head back, eyes studying her face.

“You are perfect.”

His words sent a thrill down her spine, and her lips tipped up in a smile. Pressing a hard kiss to her mouth, he released her and turned away, disappearing into the snow outside.

Letting out a sigh, Iris found her pants and pulled them on, stirring up the fire and adding fresh logs to chase away the chill. After checking the stew, she looked around for something to do. She wasn’t used to being idle, and she wanted something to focus on besides the conflicting feelings screaming for her attention.

Finding nothing that would hold her interest, she wandered back down the hall, opening the door directly across from her room. The one she slept in now used to be her mother’s, but she moved into it since it was larger, and turned her old room into her work area for her jewelry.

Opening the small chest that held the old pieces she had made, she ran her fingers over the cold metal. Each one was unique, inspired by some small thing that had interested her at the time.

Each one was also flawed in some way. Some minor thing made them unsuitable to be seen by anyone but her.

Looking at the hunk of metal held in the clamp on the table where the chest sat, it felt like months instead of days since she had worked on the piece. She hadn’t known what
